Molds are various types of fungi that grow in filaments and reproduce by forming spores. The term “mildew” refers to some kinds of mold, particularly mold in the household with a white or grayish color, or mold growing in shower stalls and bathrooms. Mold may grow indoors or outdoors and it thrives in damp, warm, and humid environments. Mold is ubiquitous and found in essentially any environment, year round.
Molds reproduce by forming tiny spores that are not visible to the naked eye. Mold spores are very hardy and can survive under conditions in which mold cannot grow, such as in dry and harsh environments. These spores travel through outdoor and indoor air. When the mold spores land on a surface where moisture is present, mold can then start to grow.
Outdoors, molds play a role in the decomposition of organic matter such as dead trees, compost, and leaves. They are most common in damp, dark areas or areas of decomposing plant life. Indoors, mold is often found in basements or shower stalls. Indoor mold has the potential to cause health problems and can destroy surfaces and objects where it grows.

Mold Testing consists of a control sample taken on the exterior of the house, which tells us the amount of mold in the air as a basis to determine if the house has elevated levels of mold. Each inside mold air sample will cover approximately 1000 sq. ft. of indoor space, so if you have more than 1000 sq. ft. or multiple levels, multiple indoor samples will be required to cover all of the indoor space.
For air samples we draw through a trap which causes the particles to stick to a slide. The samples are sent overnight to the lab and results are provided at the end of the next day. The report details the different types of mold and levels along with a probable cause.

Indoor Air Quality Testing
Pristine Inspections & Testing of Champaign, Illinois, offers indoor air quality and formaldehyde testing for nearby businesses and residences.
Indoor Air Quality Testing
Indoor pollution sources that release gases or particles into the air are the primary cause of indoor air quality problems in homes. Inadequate ventilation can increase indoor pollutant levels by not bringing in enough outdoor air to dilute emissions from indoor sources and by not carrying indoor air pollutants out of the home. High temperature and humidity levels can also increase concentrations of some pollutants. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases that are given off by a number of indoor sources. Concentrations of most volatile organic compounds are higher in indoor air than outdoor air.
Pristine Inspections & Testing can check for 400+ airborne chemicals (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) and hidden mold growth (Total Mold Volatile Organic Compounds) with a single air sample, TVOC/TMVOC test. It identifies solvents possibly used in Meth labs, sulfur compounds found in contaminated Chinese drywall, pollutants that could make you sick.

Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde, a colorless, pungent-smelling gas, can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea, and difficulty in breathing in some humans exposed at elevated levels (above 0.1 parts per million). High concentrations may trigger attacks in people with asthma. There is evidence that some people can develop sensitivity to formaldehyde. It has also shown to cause cancer in animals and may cause cancer in humans. The test for Formaldehyde runs for 20-30 minutes.
